the sky is a sombre grey today. the air is brisk and automn is rapidly approaching. i drive down to the beach and watch the seagulls peck at the dried barren beach. the tide has withdrawn and the beach is strewn with garbage. the tree leaves on the distant island are a myriad of colours dancing in the wind. people with dogs in tow are walking on the boardwalk. music is swirling in the background.
the key turns, the mailbox door swings open and i see a small pale pink envelope just barely hidden under some flyers. something's protruding causing the envelope to buckle just a bit. i finger the envelope. note the sender. take in a breath of air, knowing that it's a wonderful gift. inside, a card carefully chosen is wedged beside a little pin. words engraved on the pin in a language i don't recognize. the inside of the card is full. full of such poetic words, placed with care and thought. my wishes articulated.
